Scoring a first: Bharti Airtel deploys 4G+ technology in Kerala

Airtel 4G is available to customers across a range of smart devices including mobile phones, dongles, 4G hotspots and Wi-Fi dongles.
NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel said it has become the first mobile operator in India to commercially deploy LTE-Advanced or 4G+ technology, which delivers ultrafast mobile data speeds and enables better spectrum utilisation.

The telecom operator said it has deployed LTE-Advanced on a LIVE 4G network in Kerala using Nokia's carrier aggregation technology combining the capacities of TD LTE (2300 MHz spectrum band) and FD LTE (1800 MHz spectrum band). This has enabled it to deliver data speeds of up to 135 Mbps on commercially available mobile devices on its 4G network in the state. ET had reported that Airtel was piloting the technology in select circles, while Reliance Jio, the country's only pan-India BWA license holder, was mulling deploying LTE-U technology.

"This is a game changer for mobile broadband in India," Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel, said in a statement. "Airtel has pioneered 4G deployment in India and we are delighted to raise the innovation benchmark to deliver a world-class experience to our customers."

"Our strong 4G footprint and a rapidly maturing device ecosystem will now allow us to deliver the next level of highspeed mobile data services on our network."

Carrier aggregation enables enhanced spectrum efficiency by combining capacities across multiple LTE carriers (within same or different spectrum bands) to deliver a superior user experience and ultra-fast mobile data speeds.

The deployment is part of Airtel's ongoing network transformation programme - Project Leap- - under which Airtel plans to invest Rs 60,000 crore over the next three years to meet the growing demand of voice and high-speed data services in India and deliver the best network experience to its customers.
